Response to: 30 Things Every 30 Year Old Should Invest In

I saw this post from my Feedly, from a fashion blog I wouldn’t normally click through to.

As I read through it, I wondered how much of it was consumerism at its finest, and which things might actually be useful take-home messages for those of us trying to reduce the amount of stuff in our lives.

Without further ado…

  1. A classic black blazer. I’m wearing one right now! I can agree that wearing a blazer can make even a pair of jeans look classy. Eli has some lovely blazers for work from Rivette and Blair, which are amazing (though expensive). Unfortunately the black one is starting to show some wear, which I’m going to have to deal with somehow. My own blazer was a $10 from an op-shop.
  2. A good skincare line. Neither Eli or I have skin really suited to this yet. Although I know the importance of looking after my skin, neither of us really want to spend $200+ on skin care – particularly as it might end up just making her skin more sensitive.
  3. Clarisonic brush. I’m not really sure why I’d get one of these. I use Imperial Leather soap, and it works for us to produce squeaky clean skin. I feel like a Clarisonic brush would be something we bought and let sit in the cupboard.
  4. 4. A piece of cashmere. Not sure about this one. I don’t hold anything against cashmere, but I’m not sure why ‘every woman over the age of 30 deserves’ to have one.
  5. Kick ass bag. Absolutely – if you’re into handbags that is! Eli had one handbag that she’d had since we’d started dating, but it was finally replaced over Christmas by 3 new ones! They aren’t expensive, but I don’t think she knows what style suits her yet. Maybe in her 30s?
  6. Good Bedding. Absolutely. I’ve talked about this before – having a great mattress and amazing soft feather pillows made a huge difference to our quality of sleep.
  7. Lacy lingerie. Neither of us like lace on our undergarments. The simpler the better. The lacy stuff can come out when it’s going to be worn for 10 minutes… The rest of the time give me cotton t-shirt bras and comfy undies.
  8. DVF Wrap Dress. I’m not sure what one of these is, but I’m pretty sure I don’t need one.
  9. Respectable Luggage. I bought myself a set of expensive matching luggage about 5 years ago. Unfortunately it’s not standing the distance of time and long haul international flights. It still looks fine – but one of the zips is broken and the fabric is getting ‘pulled’. Any suggestions on what brand to buy next?
  10. A budget. This isn’t just for your 30s! If you don’t have one yet, get there and make one already!
  11. The adventure of a life time. I wish! We’ll schedule it in when we have time…
  12. Friendship. We’re pretty much focussed on family and career already. But both of us have lifelong friends that we can talk to as if we’d never parted. Those long term friends are really important to us.
  13. Your health. I’m slowly working on this one! Eli is finally preferring wholemeal noodles over white, and I’m considering that as a major hurdle passed. Plus you know, eating some salad every day!
  14. A terrific trench. Nah. It’d be nice to have one, but I don’t think we’re up to that yet.
  15. Personalised Stationary. Sorry, this sounds like another gimmick we don’t need. I’m perfectly capable of doing a hand-written note, but in this day and age, an email is what people expect. Plus most of the time I don’t have a snail mail address for them!
  16. A live household plant. We have a garden, does that count? And we’re going to get fish… just as soon as we paint the wall behind the fish…
  17. A good watch. I have several. I just can’t find them / the batteries are dead.
  18. A signature scent. I’ve had one of these since I was a teenager. It’s only for nights out! Other people wearing heavy scents makes me sneeze, so I’m never going to be one of those women.
  19. Wooden hangers. Actually, this isn’t a bad idea. Except does anyone know whether I can find some that have proper slots in the top for holding thin shoulder strap dresses?
  20. Grown up work out clothes. Yeah, yeah. Buying them does not make me exercise, so I’d consider this a waste of money.
  21. A Toolbox. yes. Tick. It’s part of owning your own home that you better have a toolbox! Mine is a hand-me-down, so I’m pretty happy with that.
  22. Your relationship. Tick. I look after that really well, don’t I Eli?
  23. A Sick Pair of Sunnies… I own a pair that Eli picked out for me and KK gave me. I’m pretty sure I’m winning.
  24. Bubble Bath Basics. You have got to be kidding me on this one. I don’t have a bath tub, we took it out when we renovated the bathroom to look more modern. We’d need a spa bath to be comfortable, and aint nobody got time or money for that.
  25. A “go to” dinner recipe. That’s easy. Noodles!
  26. Good sunscreen. Tick.
  27. Top Tailor. Do I count? I tailor our own clothes.
  28. A favourite book. Ahahahahahahaha. There are too many to count.
  29. A juicy past. Don’t I ever?
  30. Pretty pjamas. This is something we recently invested in.. But they ren’t silky, it’s the form of two really furry and fabulous dressing gowns.

Does anyone else have any ‘essentials’ for being 30? Or 20? Or any other number? I don’t think age should matter about what you buy, so long as it’s something that will give you joy for a long time.
