I’m in the market for a house. Well, a home, ideally. As they call it here, a ‘first-home buyer’ house. There seems to be plenty on the market, but only if I want to spend more than $400k on it, partially because I have really specific ideas in mind.
I’d really like it to have 4 bedrooms (mine, DMH, KK and friend), plus a study. So I’ve worked out I’m happy until KK is older to sleep in the nearest bedroom, and use the master bedroom as a study. I don’t really want a master bedroom right at the front of the house anyway – all I’m going to be doing in there is sleeping, and I like peace, quiet and dark!
I also love cooking (something I haven’t really gotten time to show you yet on here, but will come eventually), and a big kitchen is a must. Our current set up means that we have stored food everywhere, including the linen cupboard and a bookshelf in the hallway. I want to have everything where I can see it at once to help me come up with frugal and simple meals. Anyway, I want a big pantry.
The kitchen needs to overlook the lounge room in an open plan living space. At least until KK is older, there needs to be an adult eye watching all the time. Then KK’s stuff can move into a separate playroom (perhaps my ex-bedroom??).
I’m still discovering more things that I want.
And finally? It needs to be within a 25 minute drive from work. There are lots of houses that fit this description when I search. I went to see one today…
And man! It was not a good look. Yeah, it was at the bottom of my house range ($275k), and I would have been worried if it was more expensive. It had the 4 required bedrooms, but none of them seemed to have cupboards. It had a single, rather old, bathroom, and the two living areas were tiny. It was on a lovely large block though, and so if I felt like living in it, then knocking it down to replace when I could afford it, that would be ok. But the smell. It was a deceased estate, and it smelt and looked like one too. I don’t think I could deal with living with that smell.
On to the next house I suppose.
