A while back my colleagues and I went out to lunch for end-of-year celebrations at a fancy new club that had opened. Imagine my horror at finding that ‘desert’/’dessert’ were apparently interchangeable. Desserts are more delicious, so they have more s’s.
Often I find myself reading signs and the like that also have stuffed up some form of grammar. I want to beat the people over the head and tell them they need to fix it!
Now, why the sudden need to talk about grammar? Well, I saw an article that came up about how grammar usage of commas got someone out of a parking fine. It went to court, and the judge said she didn’t need to pay the fine! Now that’s the kind of useful thing I can get behind. Next time I get a ticket, I’ll have to check it out.
In the current day of electronics, computers and mobile phones can be expected to fix spelling mistakes, and there is no need for neat handwriting. But grammar is something that should still be practiced, in my honest opinion.
Now shh, don’t mention this topic – English is one of the few things that always makes Eli angry and makes me want to laugh at her and wind her up more… Comes from having parent teachers.
