It only started last Christmas, when I fished out my old Lego and bought two new ‘City’ sets to build with KK. And suddenly, before I knew what was happening, I was buying all of the collection. In fact, with a couple of exceptions, I now own most of the set, at least the 2013/14 range.

The ‘City’ collection is pretty extensive. It covers things from towtrucks to police stations, but is a bit short on actual citizens and plain buildings. That’s where the ‘Creator’ series comes in. They’re designed for more advanced builders, who are happy to build without the simplicity of numbered plastic baggies of Lego to work with. Additionally, there are three different designs you can build, all with the same pieces.

I already owned some Castle, Pirate and Explorer sets from when I was younger, and Eli had some from Toy Story. We were also collecting the TMNT sets, before the TV series was deemed too violent for KK. I wanted to try something new. As we just went on vacation, I went shopping for a suitable set we could build while away. Enter the ‘Friends’ collection. This collection is aimed primarily at girls, and has non-traditional Lego figurines. It has a jungle set though, and that’s what I wanted. KK is now old enough to build the Lego without significant help, provided that someone finds the pieces KK needs. It was well worth the purchase.

As hobbies go, Lego is a rather expensive one. It’s very difficult to find second-hand sets, because now with eBay, it’s easy to list your set and sell it for what it was originally worth. The new sets are also very expensive, but you can sometimes find sales on them. Also, there are different sets that are specific to some stores, and those prices can vary dramatically. It’s worth shopping around if you’re on the hunt and have a big Mall available to you with a number of shops.

I now have a problem. I have Lego spread across three houses, and it’s getting a bit too much. Eli really wants to set up a big village, and bought me a Lego city designer book for my birthday. We’re still looking to buy a unit, but I don’t know where we’re going to put all that Lego! I need some sort of storage or display solution. I don’t have as much Lego as the man who literally has over a tonne of Lego, but I do have a significant amount.

Does anyone have some ideas of how I could display my Lego? I want to be able to take pieces down and play with them, but also have them out of the way.

I’ve admitted before that I’m a bit obsessed with Lego.
