So far, I have been through hundreds of girls and a handful of men (huh? I was confused too). Read on for my guide to Tinder.

1. Don’t be disheartened if you don’t get replies right away (or at all). Some people just have Tinder installed on their phone but never use it.

2. Confused as to why the wrong gender is coming up for your matches? It’s likely that the false match hasn’t set their gender, and so they come up for everyone. Make sure yours is set correctly too.

3. Do you work and live in different places? If so, try using Tinder at both locations to get a wider range of options (no texting and driving please).

4. Choose your profile picture carefully. It’s going to define whether you are an automatic right swipe or a left. If you’re into only recreational drinking or smoking, don’t have it as your main pic, or you’ll lose 3/4 of your potential mates right there. Girls, if you want to attract sex mad males, go for the duck face, mirror selfy or bikini shot.

5. Don’t panic if you right swipe someone you don’t actually like by accident! If they match you back you can always just block them.

6. Think of a neat line you can use to start talking to people. ‘Hi’ just doesn’t cut it. Not do seedy pickup lines. Try asking something about something you’ve seen in their pictures. Or you could say something about yourself.

7. Don’t be desperate. If you give out your mobile number, email address or Facebook account too early, people might be scared off. At the worst, they’ll probably think you’re just there for the sex.

8. If you talk to a bunch of people, and then replies suddenly drop off, try sending out a mass response, such as ‘I haven’t heard from you in a while – did you still want to be friends? If not, could you block me please?’ Either people disappear from your list, or you get back in touch with people. Sometimes they just forget.

9. Reply regularly. If you’ve made a connection with someone, don’t just give it up because you’re busy. Try giving them another way to contact you (see point 7), or set up a date for the future.

10. Don’t assume anything. Ask all the questions you think could be useful. Stay safe (particularly for women). Meet in public places.

This is written from my perspective, with approximately 50 matches, but consistent replies from only around 15.

Happy fire-kindling!

So I’ve been using Tinder for a couple of weeks now.
