DMH replied “What, like smoking?”

Well, in a backwards kind of way, yes! See, if I needed to give up smoking, then I could save the money I would have spent on cigarettes and treat myself to new shoes. Or if I was a heavy beer drinker, I could use that money to get a gym membership. Or if I bought a coffee every day I could have the money to buy a fancy cake.

But I don’t do any of these things. I save practically any penny that comes my way. I fill out every survey, participate in experiments and work myself sick sometimes in my job. I have a lovely savings balance.

I’m thinking about buying my first home, and so I shouldn’t be spending any more money. But I hardly spend any in the first place! Surely I deserve a treat?

A coworker said that I’m thrifty enough to afford things. But if I suddenly start spending madly (such as if I become hypo manic) then I’ll feel bad, and perhaps that dream home will be even further off.

This year, I’ve aimed to write down exactly what I spend each day. Also, I’ve sorted by groups – groceries, petrol, non-essentials. I’ve been lax in checking on the money that goes out of my account automatically (such as SO and my phone plans), but I’m going to make more of an effort. Stay tuned for another post detailing this.

If you were super thrifty, would you have any area you’d still want to spend money on?

I said to DMH this morning “I wish I had some bad expensive habits”.
